What is 5G and Why Everyone is Against the Next Generation Network

5G is a next-generation mobile network that is gaining popularity around the world. It is assumed that this will improve mobile communications, make calls, and the Internet more stable, and open up new opportunities for using mobile services. Nevertheless, the news of the development of technology raised a wave of discontent in society: many opposed the fifth generation of networks. We decided to find out what 5G really is and whether it brings with it a real threat.

What is 5G

The name of the new technology does not contain secret messages: the abbreviation G comes from the English word generation, that is, generation. And the number five is its serial number – as a result, we get a fifth-generation network. Another question – what is its purpose?


Every year, the demands of the Internet and mobile users are increasing. The quality of video, images, and audio is improving, and along with the quality, their weight also grows: it takes more time to download files, as a result, the user feels that the Internet has become slower. To solve this problem, telecom operators and telecommunications equipment manufacturers are trying to improve the performance and speed of data downloads and are developing new standards for mobile networks.


As a result of technology development back in 1991, 2G networks were launched. Thanks to the new technology, users’ telephone conversations have been digitally encrypted and the services provided by operators have expanded. The transmission of SMS text messages, the exchange of pictures and images (MMS) became possible and the quality of communication improved.

Thanks to 3G, the data transmission speed has increased many times, the technology has made it possible to assign individual IP addresses to users. The size of the subscription fee also decreased, because now it was charged not for the time of using the network, but for traffic – that is, the amount of downloaded information.

In 2008 4G was already available. The technology has opened up almost limitless possibilities for using mobile services: watching videos online, using streaming platforms, and conducting live broadcasts – all this has become more accessible thanks to new generation networks.

5G benefits

The next-generation network will increase data transfer rates: it is expected that video, audio, and images, even in high quality and resolution, will download much faster. This means that it will also be much more convenient to use online services using a mobile connection, rather than fixed Wi-Fi.

However, the advantages of the network do not end there. In the future, 5G will allow the introducing virtual reality technology into our daily life, new gaming applications and platforms will appear, which previously users could only read in science fiction novels. Analysts also predict that the new generation of networks will give an impetus to the development of wireless car control services, the possibility of the widespread introduction of smart home technology, and other amazing innovations.

What’s the trouble with the 5G

Nevertheless, the launch of new networks caused a wave of discontent around the world: residents of the UK, Poland, and many other countries opposed the new technology. Against this background, a large number of false information has appeared that 5G towers are spreading coronavirus, are dangerous to health, and contribute to the development of cybercrime.

By the launch of the previous four generations of mobile networks, similar concerns were accompanied. However, experts from the World Health Organization emphasize that there is no cause for concern. Radio bands, that are used for 5G mobile communications, are harmless to humans. And research conducted by WHO shows that 5G towers cannot spread disease.

But with cybercrime, things are different: experts predict an increase in the number of hacker attacks due to the fact that high-speed Internet is becoming more accessible and widespread. Technology adoption could also enable corporations to collect new user data and use it to their advantage.

Should we be worried?

Now new generation networks already exist in 18 countries, including Great Britain, Germany, Spain, and Italy. Before presenting the innovation, it goes through severe confirmation as per all wellbeing security necessities, which implies that no negative effect on the human assortment of 5G systems. So no, we should be worried.
