What Is a Power Nap And How to Apply It in Your Everyday Life

In light of recent events, many of us have shifted from offices to our own homes and now face a problem of adapting to this new style of life. First inconvenience people have when working from home is decreased discipline. This, first of all, applies to food – people are constantly snacking, completely emptying their refrigerators, going to the good old store down the street and many other factors that make us get tired and feel lethargic way sooner than we used to in the office. And this would lead many people trying to avoid napping. But the question is, should we really avoid it? Turns out this kind of short day nap is called power nap and is actually beneficial to our health and overall performance.

The coziness that our homes provide is one of those factors that makes the biggest differences to the offices we used to be at, where we had our desks, busy people here and there, supervisors and bosses all to keep us alert and energized. Now, being at home, all that motivation is gone and many feel like job they’re doing is in vain and, as a result, performance drops.

When many of us feel that constant urge to nap when working from home it is important not to avoid it, but rather rethink your working process and actually include a short, power nap in your schedule. Scientists have found out that our attention naturally drops in the late afternoon. To fill that gat, we used to take a break from the office for a coffee and get that boost, but at home there’s really no need for a coffee break – you can take a nap. It is a win-win situation for your body and mind – avoid coffee and take a nap.

Manage Your Time Wisely

A nap helps you to regain motivation and energy, so you’re more capable of finishing your work but there’s something to consider – if you take a nap longer than needed, which is approx. 20 minutes, you’ll feel even more cranky than than before. The stage of sleep you want to avoid is called REM and it begins in 20 minutes of sleep. At that stage you enter your deepest part of sleep and you don’t want that. So, set your alarm at 20 minutes after your head hits the pillow.

The Perfect Spot

When you do head off for your afternoon nap – which should be around 2 – 3pm, according to experts – you need to make sure that you don’t have this nap in your bedroom. If you get comfortable in your bed, you won’t want to get up after this 20-minute power nap, so opt for somewhere a little more casual. This could be your couch, or it could even be your desk.

Set Up the Surroundings Right

Before taking a nap it is important to choose a setting that is more casual that your bed, because chances are that you will not want to leave your favorite, soft bed after 20 minutes of sleep. So, lay on a couch, get comfortable in an armchair or even take a rest right on your desk.
